Motihari: The Bihar education department has launched a major initiative to support students studying in government schools in Motihari district. Under this scheme, IIT Kanpur will provide free online coaching to students from classes 9 to 12 within their school campuses. This facility will benefit over 2 lakh students and is expected to greatly improve access to quality education and competitive exam preparation for children from all backgrounds.
According to official information, a total of 204,462 students from 434 high schools and higher secondary schools in Motihari will be covered under the programme. The scheme will be introduced in a phased manner. About 90,000 students from classes 11 and 12 will receive focused coaching for engineering and medical entrance examinations, while around 1.15 lakh students from classes 9 and 10 will be given foundation courses to strengthen their basic concepts and prepare them for future competitive exams.
The online coaching will be conducted through Saathi, an organisation supported by IIT Kanpur. A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Bihar education department and IIT Kanpur last year to make this possible. Classes will be held every working day from Monday to Friday. Students aiming for engineering will be taught subjects such as mathematics, physics, chemistry and English, while those interested in medical studies will receive coaching in biology, botany, physics, chemistry and English.
To ensure smooth learning, schools will be provided with smart TVs or digital boards and all necessary equipment for online classes. Backup power arrangements like batteries and inverters will help continue classes during power cuts. Weekly assessments will be conducted to review what students have learned, and students who perform well will be identified and encouraged further.
The scheme also supports students who are not interested in engineering or medical careers. Separate groups will be formed to prepare students for exams such as the Staff Selection Commission (SSC), banking and other government job examinations. Until now, many students had to depend on expensive private coaching centres after school, which was difficult for families with limited income. Officials believe this initiative will reduce this gap and help combine regular education with career preparation, giving government school students a stronger future.
