Patna: IITs Open Special Admission Routes for Talented Students in Sports, Arts and Science Olympiads
India’s premier Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are increasingly recognizing exceptional talent beyond academics. Through supernumerary seats (additional seats), students with outstanding achievements in sports, arts, and science competitions can secure admission to IITs.
For the 2026 academic session, several leading IITs have introduced special admission pathways for candidates excelling in sports, fine arts, and Olympiads.
Direct Admission for Science Olympiad Achievers
Students with outstanding performances in Science Olympiads can gain admission without appearing for JEE (Advanced). Interested candidates can find details and apply through the official JoSAA website: https://josaa.nic.in/.
Sports Excellence Admission
A special Sports Excellence Admission (SEA) route has been introduced for students who have demonstrated exceptional achievements in sports. Through this scheme, candidates can seek admission to:
- IIT Indore
- IIT Kharagpur
- IIT Madras
- IIT Mandi
- IIT Roorkee
Fine Arts and Culture Excellence Route
For students with strong achievements in arts and culture, a Fine Arts and Culture Excellence (FACE) admission process has been launched. Under this category, admissions are available at:
- IIT Madras
- IIT Mandi
Opportunity to Enter Three IITs Through Olympiad Excellence
One of the biggest benefits is for meritorious science students. Under the Science Olympiad Excellence (SCOPE) admission route, students who have excelled in national or international science Olympiads can gain admission to:
- IIT Kharagpur
- IIT Madras
- IIT Mandi
Applicants under this category are not required to appear for JEE (Advanced).
Special Route for Mathematics Olympiad Students
IIT Madras has also introduced a dedicated Olympiad-based admission pathway for students with exceptional achievements in mathematics.
Students who perform exceptionally well in Mathematics Olympiads can gain admission to the recently launched four-year Bachelor of Science (BS) programme at IIT Madras.
No Impact on Regular Seats
Under these special admission schemes, candidates are evaluated based on both their academic credentials and their exceptional talents. Since admissions are offered through supernumerary seats, they do not affect the number of seats available to regular candidates.
The admission process is separate from the regular JoSAA counselling system. Candidates who select the SEA, FACE, or SCOPE options on the JoSAA portal are redirected to dedicated online portals where they can complete their applications.
