Patna: Bihar is likely to witness a change in weather conditions on September 17, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and Patna Meteorological Centre warning of thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds in parts of the state.
According to the latest forecast, Jamui, Munger and Nawada are under a heavy rainfall alert for Thursday. Several districts in south-central and south-eastern Bihar may also experience thunderstorms and winds reaching 30–40 kmph.
Rain Forecast Across 32 Districts
Rainfall is expected at one or two places in several districts across Bihar on September 17.
In north-west Bihar, West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Siwan and Saran may receive rain. In north-central Bihar, rainfall is possible in Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Vaishali, Sheohar and Samastipur.
In north-east Bihar, the districts of Supaul, Araria, Kishanganj, Purnia, Katihar, Madhepura and Saharsa may also receive rain at some locations.
The forecast also covers Patna, Gaya, Nalanda, Nawada, Jehanabad, Sheikhpura, Begusarai and Lakhisarai in south-central Bihar.
In south-eastern Bihar, rain is likely in Bhagalpur, Banka, Jamui, Munger and Khagaria.
30–40 Kmph Winds And Lightning Warning
The weather department has issued a warning of thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds of 30–40 kmph for south-central and south-eastern Bihar.
The possibility of heavy rainfall in Jamui, Munger and Nawada has prompted an additional alert for these districts.
Residents are advised to remain cautious during thunderstorms and avoid exposed areas when lightning activity occurs.
Temperatures Likely To Remain Stable
No major change in maximum temperatures is expected across most parts of Bihar over the next two to three days, while minimum temperatures are likely to remain broadly stable over the next five days.
On September 17, maximum temperatures in north-west and north-central Bihar are expected to remain around 32–34°C.
The forecast puts maximum temperatures at around 30–32°C in north-eastern, south-central and south-eastern Bihar.
Heavy Rain Recorded In Four Districts
During the previous 24 hours, heavy rainfall was recorded at one or two locations in Khagaria, Banka, Darbhanga and Samastipur.
The highest maximum temperature in the state was recorded at 37.6°C in Bhabua, Kaimur, while Valmiki Nagar recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 24.2°C.
Strong winds were also recorded, with Munger reporting a maximum wind speed of 41 kmph.
IMD Advises Caution During Thunderstorms
The weather department has advised people to take precautions during thunderstorms and lightning.
Residents should avoid open fields, tall trees and electric poles during lightning activity. Where possible, people should take shelter inside sturdy buildings.
The department has also advised caution in low-lying areas, where heavy rainfall could lead to waterlogging and a rise in river water levels.
People are advised to monitor official weather updates and follow local authorities’ safety instructions during periods of severe weather.
