New Delhi: The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) on Monday extended the deadline for filing income tax returns (ITR) for the 2025-26 assessment year by a day after its e-filing portal suffered technical glitches due to heavy traffic.
The revised deadline, which was originally set for September 15, has now been moved to September 16. A statement issued late on Monday night said: “The Central Board of Direct Taxes has decided to extend the last date for filing income tax returns for the assessment year 2025-26 from September 15, 2025 to September 16, 2025.”
The CBDT added that the e-filing portal will undergo maintenance from 12:00 am to 2:30 pm on Tuesday, during which services will remain limited.
The decision follows numerous complaints from taxpayers who were unable to file returns before the cut-off time on Monday. The department clarified that those who submit their ITRs by Tuesday will not face any penalties.
By Monday evening, more than 7.3 crore returns had been filed, surpassing the 7.28 crore filed in the previous assessment year. In 2023-24, the number stood at 6.77 crore, reflecting a steady year-on-year increase in compliance.
The rush was further compounded as September 15 was also the last date for paying advance tax for the second quarter of the current financial year, leading to a surge in traffic on the portal.
