Patna: Indian Railways has introduced a new SMS alert service to provide passengers with advance information about platform changes, route diversions and other operational updates. The initiative, initially benefiting passengers travelling through major stations in the East Central Railway (ECR) zone, including Patna Junction and the Danapur Division, is intended to make train journeys more convenient and reduce last-minute disruptions.
Under the new system, passengers will receive notifications directly on their registered mobile numbers whenever there is a change in their train’s platform or route.
Advance Alerts for Platform and Route Changes
According to railway officials, passengers will receive SMS alerts around 45 minutes to one hour before a scheduled platform change.
The Railways is also making arrangements to notify passengers three to four hours in advance if a train’s route is altered. The advance notice is expected to help travellers reach the correct platform or station without unnecessary delays.
Reduced Dependence on Inquiry Counters
The SMS alert system is expected to reduce the need for passengers to rely on public announcements or visit inquiry counters for updates.
Railway officials said the service would help passengers avoid rushing between platforms with luggage after unexpected platform changes, making station navigation easier, particularly during peak travel hours.
Bulk SMS Notifications for Registered Passengers
The Railways will send alerts in bulk to the registered mobile numbers of affected passengers.
For example, if a train scheduled to depart from Patna Junction is shifted to Patliputra Junction because of operational reasons, passengers will receive an SMS explaining the revised departure station and other relevant details.
NTES App Also Receives Upgrade
Alongside the SMS service, Indian Railways has upgraded the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) mobile application.
The updated app allows passengers to check live train locations, expected arrival and departure timings, delay status and route information. By enabling notifications within the app, users can also receive real-time alerts related to their train journey.
Railway Official Highlights Digital Push
Abhinav Siddharth, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (DCM) of the Danapur Division, said Indian Railways is continuing to adopt new technologies to improve passenger services.
He said the latest NTES upgrade and SMS alert system will provide passengers with timely information on platform changes and train delays, helping make rail travel smoother and more convenient.
