Bhagalpur: In a move that could bring significant relief to passengers travelling between Bihar and the national capital, Indian Railways is preparing to introduce a clone of the heavily booked Vikramshila Express. The proposed train, which is expected to operate thrice a week between Bhagalpur and Anand Vihar Terminal aims to ease the pressure on existing services, particularly for those struggling to secure confirmed reservations.
Vikramshila Express is one of the primary trains connecting Bhagalpur to Delhi, runs daily but often sees tickets booked out weeks in advance. Securing a seat—especially under Tatkal quota—has become increasingly difficult due to surging demand. The Garib Rath, another major service on the same route operating three days a week, also remains overbooked, with its all-AC configuration offering little respite for passengers from different economic backgrounds.
According to officials, the Eastern Railway’s Kolkata headquarters has finalised a comprehensive plan for the new service, termed the “Clone Vikramshila Express”, and submitted it to the Railway Board. The proposal outlines a detailed timetable and the specific days the train would operate. Railway insiders suggest that board approval is expected shortly, paving the way for operations to begin soon after.
The clone train will mirror the composition and amenities of the original Vikramshila Express, including a 20-coach configuration comprising AC, sleeper and general class coaches. Scheduled halts and stoppage durations will also remain identical to maintain consistency and convenience for passengers.
A senior railway official from the Malda division confirmed, “There is enormous passenger pressure on the Bhagalpur-Delhi route. In view of this, we have requested the Railway Board to clear a clone service. Once approved, it will significantly enhance travel options alongside the existing Vikramshila and Garib Rath trains.”
