Patna: Bihar authorities have energised a 132 kV transmission line and a 100 MVA, 33/132 kV transformer at the Kajra Solar Power Plant in Lakhisarai district, marking a significant milestone for what is being described as one of the country’s largest battery-storage backed solar projects.
The work, supervised by the Bihar State Power Generation Company Limited (BSPGCL) and Bihar State Power Transmission Company Limited (BSPTCL), enables the flow of power from the plant into the state grid. The line has now been energised from both the Haveli Kharagpur and Lakhisarai grid substations.
According to the state’s Energy Department Secretary, Manoj Kumar Singh, who also heads the Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited, the development will help provide continuous and uninterrupted power to local consumers. Singh said the achievement represents a “major step towards promoting solar energy in the state and strengthening the electricity system.”
The plant’s integrated battery storage system is expected to allow four to five hours of supply during peak demand, even without sunlight, officials said. This is intended to reduce grid instability and outages, a common challenge in rural districts during high-load periods. A senior BSPGCL official described Kajra as “one of the largest battery storage solar energy projects in India,” and said its activation would boost the state’s production of green energy.
The project is being executed in phases. The first phase — comprising a 185 MW solar array and a 254 MWh battery storage system — has been constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 1810 crore. The second phase will add another 116 MW of generation and 241 MWh of storage at Rs. 1055 crore, and is scheduled for completion in January 2027.
Once fully operational, the Kajra plant will have a total generation capacity of 301 MW and a combined storage capacity of 495 MWh, placing it among the most advanced solar-battery facilities in India.
