Patna: The Central Government has approved a Rs 3,936.05 crore project to widen the Khagaria–Purnia highway into a four-lane corridor, a move expected to significantly improve connectivity across north-eastern Bihar and reduce travel time between the two cities to around two hours.
According to the government, the project will upgrade a 143.529-kilometre stretch of National Highways 31 and 231 under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT)-Toll model.
What the Project Includes
The approved project involves widening the existing two-lane highway connecting Khagaria, Bhagalpur, Katihar and Purnia into a four-lane carriageway.
Officials said the upgraded corridor is intended to improve traffic flow on one of the region’s key transport routes while supporting the movement of passengers and freight.
The project will be implemented under the BOT (Toll) model, under which the concessionaire will build, operate and maintain the highway while recovering costs through toll collection.
Purnia to Get a New Bypass
As part of the project, a 6.729-kilometre greenfield bypass will be constructed around Purnia.
According to officials, the bypass is expected to divert through traffic away from the city, reducing congestion within urban limits and improving travel efficiency for vehicles heading towards neighbouring districts and states.
Travel Time Expected to Be Halved
The government said the upgraded highway is expected to reduce the journey between Khagaria and Purnia to about two hours, roughly half the time currently required.
Officials also said the wider carriageway, improved road geometry and modern safety features are expected to enhance driving conditions and help reduce the risk of road accidents.
Boost for Regional Connectivity
The highway passes through several important districts, including Khagaria, Bhagalpur, Katihar and Purnia, serving as a major transport link in eastern Bihar.
According to the government, improved connectivity is expected to facilitate trade, movement of agricultural produce and passenger travel across the region.
Minister Says Work Will Begin Soon
Road Construction Minister Shailendra, according to the government, said the project has received approval and construction is expected to begin shortly.
He said the highway would improve transport links in the Kosi region and support commercial activity while making travel more convenient for residents.
What’s Next?
With the project now approved, the next steps will include the tendering and implementation process under the BOT (Toll) model. Construction is expected to begin after the completion of procedural formalities.
