Patna: The traditional Makar Sankranti Dahi-Chura feast at Tej Pratap Yadav’s residence turned into a significant political and familial event, as RJD supremo Lalu Prasad made a surprise visit, ending a seven-month-long estrangement from his son.
Speaking to the media, Lalu Prasad emphasised that disagreements are a natural part of family life and clarified that he was not angry with Tej Pratap. “Tej Pratap has my blessings; he will now stay with the family,” Lalu said, signalling a renewed familial bond.
The RJD leader also addressed rumours of his son joining the BJP, stating that Tej Pratap would always have his blessings and that his wish was for him to be happy and successful, wherever he is. Analysts described Lalu’s statements as more emotional than political, suggesting a softening of family relations rather than a strategic political move.
Political Significance of the Feast
The gathering drew several notable political figures, including Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, elder maternal uncle Prabhunath Yadav, former MP Sadhu Yadav, and Chetan Anand. The attendance of Sadhu Yadav—once a vocal critic of Tej Pratap—was seen as a gesture of reconciliation, sending ripples through political circles.
However, the absence of Tejashwi Yadav and Rabri Devi remained a point of discussion, highlighting that while bridges are being rebuilt, some relationships have yet to fully normalise.
Tej Pratap’s Gesture
Tej Pratap described the feast as an effort to uphold tradition and strengthen family ties. “I respect all senior leaders and family members. This is the hallmark of my politics,” he said, presenting the event as both a cultural and personal initiative.
Earlier, he had visited his mother Rabri Devi’s residence after seven months, extending invitations to his father, mother, and brother, and displaying familial warmth by holding his niece Katyayani in his arms. He had also met Lalu Yadav at Misa Bharti’s residence in Delhi, further signalling reconciliation.
Political observers note that the Dahi-Chura feast has evolved beyond tradition into a platform for dialogue. Tej Pratap’s attendance at Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sinha’s recent Dahi-Chura event, along with nuanced responses to questions about joining the NDA, adds layers to Bihar’s political dynamics. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s presence at a similar feast hosted by Ratnesh Sada reinforced the growing political significance of these festive gatherings.
