Muzaffarpur: MIT Muzaffarpur, one of Bihar’s leading technical institutes, has suspended six students following allegations that juniors were subjected to overnight abuse and harassment by seniors.
According to complaints, members of the 2024 batch repeatedly called younger students late at night, forcing them to gather on the college grounds or in secluded areas where they were allegedly abused, beaten and humiliated for hours. Victims reported being made to sit until morning, with some alleging they were forced to smoke cigarettes, had their hair pulled and were verbally abused.
The college’s anti-ragging committee investigated the claims and identified six students from the civil, IT, leather technology, electrical and computer science departments. They were suspended, ordered to vacate the hostel and had their biometric IDs blocked. The administration said the action would remain in place until the disciplinary committee reaches a final decision.
This is the latest in a series of incidents at MIT Muzaffarpur. Last August, juniors were allegedly forced to sing obscene Bhojpuri songs on campus and made to strip to their T-shirts after protesting. That case was reported to the University Grants Commission’s anti-ragging cell. Reports of harassment have surfaced at the institute several times in recent years.
In a separate complaint, an MTech student has accused two BTech students of harassment and threats. The student told the principal in writing that the pair behaved aggressively and tried to intimidate her.
The college administration said on Tuesday that it would take strict action against those found guilty and pledged to prioritise the safety of junior students. “Ragging will not be tolerated on campus,” an official said, adding that monitoring and enforcement measures would be tightened to prevent future incidents.
