Sitamarhi: The Bihar government has moved a step closer to developing Punauradham in Sitamarhi district as a major religious and tourism centre, with a work order issued for the construction of the Maa Janaki Janmabhoomi temple complex. The project is part of a broader plan by the state to give national and international recognition to sites of religious and cultural importance.
Punauradham is believed to be the birthplace of Goddess Sita, the daughter of King Janaka and the consort of Lord Rama, as described in the Ramayana. Because of this belief, the site holds deep religious significance for Hindus and followers of Sanatana Dharma. After the completion of the grand Ram temple in Ayodhya, the Bihar government has announced that Punauradham will also be developed on a similar scale, keeping its spiritual importance at the centre of the project.
According to the tourism department, the Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation has completed the tender process and issued the work order to Ahluwalia Contracts. The project includes upgrading the existing temple, constructing new buildings, and carrying out tourism-related development works. The total cost of the project has been estimated at Rs 942.383 crore, and the contractor has been given 42 months to complete the construction work.
The development plan includes the construction of a circumambulation path around the main temple, a boundary wall, and a ritual pavilion. The Maa Janaki Kund will also be beautified. In addition, facilities such as accommodation for pilgrims, a museum and other basic amenities will be built to improve the experience of visitors. After completion, the contractor will also handle the operation and management of the complex for 10 years.
Officials said the project is expected to boost religious tourism in Bihar and create new employment opportunities for local people. Once completed, the Maa Janaki Janmabhoomi temple complex is expected to become one of the state’s most important pilgrimage destinations, attracting devotees from across the country.
