Gayaji: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday threw his weight behind a proposed law that would see prime ministers, chief ministers and ministers automatically removed from office if they remained in jail for more than 30 days.
Speaking at a public gathering in Gayaji, PM Modi said the legislation would apply even to him. “Earlier people used to sign files while sitting in jail. We have brought such a bill which includes even the PM. If arrested and not granted bail within 30 days, the PM or CM will cease to be in power on the 31st day,” he said. “This is a strong step to end corruption and crime in politics. But Congress and RJD are jittery because they fear this bill will shatter their dreams.”
The prime minister also reiterated his commitment to the “Demography Mission”, first announced in his Independence Day address, vowing to expel “infiltrators” who he claimed were changing the demographic balance in Bihar’s border districts. “We will not allow infiltrators to take away jobs and opportunities meant for Indians. Parties like Congress and RJD want to hand over your rights to them to expand their vote bank,” he said.
Earlier, PM Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of projects worth Rs 13,000 crore in Bihar, including trains, infrastructure and housing schemes. He contrasted this with what he described as the “lantern rule” of previous governments, when cities like Gayaji “were immersed in darkness” and migration from Bihar was rife.
“RJD and its allies only treated Biharis as a vote bank,” PM Modi said, accusing them of ignoring education, employment and dignity. He recalled that during Congress rule, even leaders from the party had voiced discriminatory remarks against people from Bihar.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, sharing the stage, spoke about local development projects and said his government had worked to uplift all sections of society. “We got Gaya named Gayaji, built a rubber dam and bridge in the Falgu river, and carried out new constructions in Bodh Gaya,” he said.
PM Modi, meanwhile, returned to his welfare plank, highlighting that more than 38 lakh homes had been built in Bihar under his government. “My resolve is that till every needy person gets a permanent house, PM Modi will not sit in peace. We have not only given homes but also dignity, with facilities like electricity, water and gas connection,” he said.
