Mokama/Patna: Bihar’s rail connectivity is set for a major upgrade with train operations on the new double-line rail bridge over the Ganga at Mokama likely to begin in October 2026.
Built parallel to the existing Rajendra Setu, the new bridge is being connected to the main railway network. Once operational, the double-line bridge is expected to increase capacity on the busy rail corridor and reduce pressure on the existing single-line bridge.
Mega Block From September 20 to October 4
Railways will undertake critical technical work to integrate the new bridge with the existing network. A mega block will remain in effect from September 20 to October 4 for non-interlocking work.
During this period, railway teams will connect the new double-line bridge, signalling systems and electronic panels with the existing infrastructure.
Several trains will be diverted or operated with temporary route changes during the mega block. Passengers have been advised to check the latest train schedule and route information before travelling.
Bridge to Connect Mokama-Baruni and Howrah-Delhi Routes
The new bridge will be integrated with the Mokama-Baruni section as well as the Howrah-Delhi main line, strengthening rail connectivity between different parts of Bihar and the wider eastern and northern railway network.
The new rail connection will serve stations and locations including Aphar Hathidah, Tal Junction, Rampur Dumra, Dinkar Gram Simaria and Barauni Junction.
Rs 1,700 Crore Project
The Mokama double-line rail bridge project has been developed at an estimated cost of around Rs 1,700 crore.
The main bridge is approximately 1.86 km long, while the overall project, including connecting tracks and associated construction, extends to around 14 km.
The project is aimed at increasing the capacity of the railway corridor rather than simply providing an additional crossing over the Ganga.
Pressure on Existing Single-Line Bridge Expected to Ease
At present, train operations over the old Rajendra Setu are conducted on a single railway line. The additional double-line infrastructure is expected to provide greater flexibility for train operations and reduce congestion on the existing route.
The additional capacity could also help reduce waiting time for trains at outer areas and improve the movement of passenger and freight services along the corridor.
Several Trains to Face Route Changes
The mega block will affect the operation of several major trains. Services including the Delhi-Kamakhya Express, Howrah-Prayagraj Rambagh Vibhuti Express, Purva Express, Vande Bharat Express and Amritsar-Howrah Mail are among those affected by temporary operational changes.
Railway authorities are issuing information about diversions and other changes so passengers can plan their journeys accordingly.
Rail Connectivity Across Bihar Set for Boost
The new bridge is expected to improve connectivity between Patna, Begusarai, Lakhisarai, Samastipur, Khagaria and the Seemanchal region, while also strengthening the movement of trains along the busy Howrah-Delhi corridor.
The immediate focus is now on completing the non-interlocking, signalling and connectivity work during the scheduled mega block.
If the technical work is completed as planned, train operations on the new Mokama double-line rail bridge could begin in October 2026.
