Patna: The monsoon is now fully active in Bihar, triggering a worsening flood situation across several districts. Intermittent rainfall since Friday night in Patna, Buxar, Supaul, and other regions has led to widespread waterlogging in the state capital.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for 25 districts today, warning of light to moderate rainfall. Despite active showers in recent days, the state has recorded 26% less rainfall than normal so far this season. Against an expected 566 mm, only 420 mm has been received.
Flood Situation Worsens
In Begusarai, floodwaters have forced the closure of 118 schools until further notice. Khagaria has shut 32 schools, and Vaishali has closed 80. Ganga water is flowing over roads in Bachhwara, Begusarai, and Lal Darwaza link road in Munger, submerging vehicles and forcing people to wade through waist-deep water.
In Munger district, six blocks—Sadar Munger, Bariyarpur, Jamalpur, Dharhara, Haveli Kharagpur, and Asarganj—are inundated. Around 80 houses in Krishnanagar village of Bariyarpur are submerged under four feet of water, damaging all household belongings.
Patna is also reeling under the Ganga’s spate, with two to four feet of water on connecting roads near Mahavir Ghat and Bhadraghat. Many ghats in Patna City are underwater, prompting the administration to barricade approach roads.
Buxar Boat Mishap
In Buxar, floodwater has covered stretches of the Buxar–Mohania State Highway, forcing locals to use boats. A major accident was narrowly avoided when a passenger boat carrying motorcycles sank in the Ganga after travelling without official permission. All passengers managed to escape with their bikes.
Widespread Inundation in Other Districts
Floodwater has entered villages in Lakhisarai and Khagaria, with waterlogging reported inside homes and school premises. In Chhapra, the rising levels of the Ganga and Saryu rivers have breached into the city’s main areas, intensifying concerns for residents.
Weather Outlook
According to the IMD, no significant change is expected in maximum and minimum temperatures over the next three to four days. The prevailing humid heat is likely to persist, though rain in some regions may bring temporary relief.
