Darbhanga: Nearly three months after the death of her only son, a mother in Darbhanga has taken her own life, highlighting ongoing concerns over the investigation into the boy’s death.
Manisha Kumari, 35, consumed sulfas tablets at her home on Sunday evening. She was initially admitted to a private hospital and later referred to Darbhanga Medical College Hospital after her condition worsened. Despite medical efforts, she died on Tuesday.
Her son, nine-year-old Kashyap Kumar, was found hanging in the hostel of Mount Summer Convent School in Laheriasarai on October 7. Kashyap, a second-grade student, had been living in the hostel since September 10. The school administration and police declared his death a suicide, but the family has alleged that the boy was beaten to death and then hanged to make it appear self-inflicted.
Shivshankar Kumar, Kashyap’s maternal uncle, lodged a complaint with the Bahadurpur police station claiming, “My nephew was brutally beaten and murdered, and then hanged to make it look like a suicide.” He also alleged that despite repeated appeals to the police, senior officials, and school authorities, no meaningful action had been taken.
Manisha’s family said the unresolved investigation had left her mentally exhausted. Her brother said police repeatedly dismissed her pleas for justice, leaving her distressed. “The police chased Manisha away when she went to the station seeking help,” he said.
Manisha’s death has deepened the family’s grief. Prince Kumar, her nephew, said: “My aunt was exhausted fighting for justice for her son’s murder. First, my cousin died, and now my aunt has also left us. Our entire family is shattered.”
The family has renewed its demand for an impartial investigation into Kashyap Kumar’s death and strict action against those responsible.
