Motihari: Motihari plans to develop the Motihari airstrip under the Centre’s UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) scheme have moved forward, with a team of experts completing a technical inspection of the site for the proposed construction of a new runway.
According to officials, the project aims to enable small aircraft operations from the airstrip, improving regional air connectivity in East Champaran and the surrounding areas.
Technical Survey Completed
An expert team carried out an on-site assessment to evaluate the approximately 25 acres of land available for the proposed runway.
The survey examined the technical feasibility of the project, assessed land availability and identified any engineering or operational challenges that may need to be addressed before construction begins.
Officials said work on the runway will commence after the project receives the necessary technical clearance and statutory approvals.
Air Connectivity Under UDAN Scheme
The proposed development is part of efforts to connect Motihari to the regional aviation network through the Central government’s UDAN scheme.
Once operational, the upgraded airstrip is expected to accommodate small domestic aircraft, providing residents of Motihari and neighbouring districts with improved access to air travel.
Expected Economic Benefits
Officials said improved air connectivity could support trade, tourism and investment in the Champaran region.
The area, known for its historical and cultural significance, is expected to benefit from better links with other cities, potentially improving access for business travellers and tourists.
Approvals Awaited
Additional Commissioner Mukesh Kumar Sinha said the expert team had completed its inspection of the airstrip site and that the administration was awaiting the final technical clearance.
He said construction of the runway would begin once the required approvals are received, with officials aiming to complete the project within the prescribed timeframe.
