Patna: A Motihari district police constable allegedly shot his sister dead before taking his own life with his service pistol near Mithila Colony turn in the Danapur police station area on Tuesday night.
The deceased were identified as Shrimchand, also known as Sonu, a constable with Motihari police, and his sister Gayatri Devi. Both were natives of Muzaffarpur.
Police reached the spot after receiving information about the shooting and began an investigation.
Family Dispute Preceded Shooting
According to family members, Sonu and his family had been living in a rented house on the first floor of Mithila Colony for around a year. The household included Sonu, Gayatri Devi, a younger brother and a younger sister.
Gayatri Devi had married in 2024 but was reportedly experiencing mental distress and had been staying with her brother. Relatives said Sonu was also concerned about her condition.
An argument reportedly broke out between the siblings inside the house on Tuesday evening. The dispute subsequently escalated, after which Sonu allegedly took out his service pistol and shot Gayatri Devi in the neck.
She collapsed immediately.
Sonu then placed the pistol against his own head and fired. The younger brother and sister, who were inside the house, fled outside after hearing the gunshots.
Police Begin Investigation
Neighbours rushed to the spot after hearing the successive gunshots and informed the police.
City SP (West) Sanket Kumar and a police team reached the location and began examining the scene.
A Forensic Science Laboratory team was also called to collect evidence. Police seized the constable’s service pistol and gathered other evidence from the scene.
According to preliminary police information, an altercation and family dispute between the siblings preceded the shooting. However, the exact reason for the incident is being investigated.
The incident triggered panic in Mithila Colony as police continued examining all aspects of the case.
