Motihari: A dramatic scene unfolded in Motihari on Saturday when a young woman scaled a 180ft mobile tower, threatening to jump if anyone tried to force her down.
The woman, from Harsiddhi Bazar in the Harsiddhi police station area, had given birth to a child just 10 days ago and was staying at her maternal home. Her in-laws had insisted she return with them, but she refused, triggering a family dispute that escalated into the public standoff.
Police officers led by Harsiddhi station house officer Sarvendra Kumar rushed to the scene after villagers raised the alarm. A large crowd gathered beneath the tower, complicating rescue efforts as the woman warned she would jump if anyone attempted to grab her.
Local leaders had earlier convened a panchayat to resolve the matter, but no settlement was reached. With the situation dragging on for over an hour, police continued efforts to persuade her to descend safely.
Authorities said the precise reasons behind her protest would only be known once she agreed to come down. “We are in continuous talks and taking every precaution to ensure her safety,” SHO Kumar said.
At the time of reporting, the woman was still on the tower and negotiations were ongoing.
