Patna/Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Police have allegedly placed Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) chief and former Bihar minister Mukesh Sahani under “house arrest”, preventing him from travelling to Shahjahanpur to attend a Nishad community programme. Sahani has termed the action an attack on democracy and accused the state government of suppressing dissent.
According to a statement issued by the VIP, police personnel stopped Sahani from leaving his residence in Lucknow following instructions issued by the Shahjahanpur district administration. The party claimed the move was based on concerns that his visit could affect law and order.

Police Cited Law and Order Concerns
The party said a letter issued by the Superintendent of Police, Shahjahanpur, stated that Sahani’s proposed visit could potentially disturb law and order and social harmony in the district.
Based on the communication, officials were instructed to detain Sahani in Lucknow and monitor his movements, preventing him from proceeding with his scheduled programme in Shahjahanpur.
Sahani Alleges Violation of Democratic Rights
Reacting to the development, Sahani alleged that the Uttar Pradesh government was attempting to silence leaders working in the public interest.
He described the restrictions as an “undeclared emergency”, claiming that preventing an elected public representative from meeting people and attending scheduled events amounted to a direct attack on democratic values.
Sahani further alleged that the administration was afraid of dissenting voices and was avoiding dialogue by restricting the movement of opposition leaders.
Nishad Community Movement Will Continue, Says VIP Chief
Sahani also linked the action to the ongoing demand for the rights, entitlements and reservation of the Nishad community.
He said attempts to prevent him from participating in community programmes would not weaken the movement. According to him, the Nishad community would continue its democratic struggle for its rights despite administrative restrictions.
Political Reactions Intensify
The incident has triggered political debate, with VIP leaders and supporters condemning the administration’s action. Party workers alleged that political considerations were influencing even social and community events.
According to party sources, Sahani was scheduled to attend the Shahjahanpur programme as the chief guest before police prevented him from leaving his Lucknow residence. He later protested the action through social media and statements issued by the party.
Administration Yet to Issue Detailed Response
While the VIP has described the action as politically motivated, a detailed official statement from the Uttar Pradesh administration explaining the reasons behind the restrictions is still awaited.
The episode has become the latest flashpoint in the political discourse, with the opposition portraying it as a question of democratic rights and freedom of movement, while the administration has so far cited concerns relating to law and order.
