Patna: A proposed new railway line connecting Bhagwanpur and Karpurigram via Mahua and Tajpur is expected to strengthen rail connectivity across parts of north Bihar, with the project estimated to cost Rs 1,692 crore.
The proposed corridor will involve laying around 60km of new railway track. A detailed project report is expected to be prepared following approval for the proposal.
The project is expected to improve connectivity for areas in Vaishali and Samastipur districts and could provide an alternative route to existing rail corridors in the region.
Five New Stations Planned
Under the proposed plan, five new railway stations are expected to be developed at Mahua Jalalpur, Mukandpur, Sultanpur Haq, Harihar and Tajpur.
Bhagwanpur and Karpurigram stations are also expected to be upgraded as part of the project.
The plan includes the construction of seven major bridges and 51 underpasses. A road overbridge has also been proposed near Tajpur to cross National Highway 28.
According to the proposal, the 60km route will not have any level crossings.
Direct Route Between Bhagwanpur and Karpurigram
The proposed railway line could allow trains travelling from the Hajipur side to reach Karpurigram through Bhagwanpur, Mahua and Tajpur without travelling through Muzaffarpur.
The route could also improve connectivity between Muzaffarpur and Mahua through Bhagwanpur.
Bhagwanpur may be developed further as an important rail interchange in the future, according to the proposed plan.
Distance May Reduce by Around 20km
At present, travelling between Bhagwanpur and Karpurigram through the existing route via Muzaffarpur involves a distance of around 80km.
The proposed new line could reduce the distance to about 60km, saving approximately 20km.
The project may also help reduce pressure on existing rail and road routes in parts of north Bihar.
Potential Benefits for Trade and Agriculture
The proposed rail corridor could also improve transport options for agricultural produce and local businesses.
Areas including Tajpur, Morwa, Sarairanjan, Goroul and Sarai have significant commercial and agricultural activity. A station near Tajpur’s vegetable market could provide farmers with another option for transporting produce to larger markets.
Improved rail connectivity may help reduce dependence on road transport and lower logistics costs, particularly for bulk agricultural goods.
Part of Bihar’s Rail Infrastructure Expansion
The proposed project comes amid continued investment in railway infrastructure across Bihar. As of April 1, 2025, 52 railway projects involving new lines, gauge conversion and doubling works were sanctioned fully or partly in the state, according to a Ministry of Railways statement issued in March 2026.
However, the proposed Muzaffarpur-Mahua corridor will need to progress through detailed planning and subsequent implementation stages before construction can begin.
The project, if completed as proposed, could provide Mahua and surrounding areas with improved rail connectivity while creating a shorter link between key locations in Vaishali and Samastipur districts.
