Muzaffarpur/Patna: An 18-year-old student in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district has died by suicide after reportedly becoming distressed over her Intermediate examination results, police said.

The incident took place in Ibrahimpur village under the Saraiya police station area, where the student, identified as Alpana Rani, was found dead inside her room.

According to family members, Alpana had recently received her Class 12 results, in which she secured a second division. Relatives said she had been hoping for a first division and appeared upset after the results were announced.

Family members said she had locked herself inside her room and did not respond for a prolonged period, prompting concern. When the door was forced open, she was found unresponsive. She was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

Police reached the scene after being informed and sent the body for postmortem examination. A forensic team has also been involved in the investigation.

Rural SP Rajesh Singh Prabhakar said preliminary findings suggested the incident may be linked to distress following the examination results, though further investigation is under way.

Relatives described Alpana as a bright student who had expected a stronger result. They said the gap between her expectations and the outcome had affected her deeply.

The incident has renewed concerns over academic pressure on students. While announcing the results, education minister Sunil Kumar had urged students not to be disheartened by marks and appealed to parents to support their children.

Experts say such incidents underline the need for greater attention to students’ mental wellbeing and support systems, particularly during examination periods.
