Rajgir/Patna: Nalanda University is hosting a two-day India–Portugal Dialogue in Rajgir to mark 50 years of modern diplomatic relations between the two countries, bringing together diplomats, scholars and policymakers for discussions on cooperation and shared futures.
The event, centred on diplomacy, culture, language and sustainable development, opened on Saturday with a focus on strengthening academic and institutional engagement.
Focus on collaboration and shared history
Welcoming delegates, vice-chancellor Sachin Chaturvedi highlighted the importance of academic partnerships, research collaboration and exchange of ideas in strengthening bilateral ties.
Among those present was Sibi George, secretary (west) at the ministry of external affairs, along with representatives from India and Portugal.
Portugal’s ambassador to India, João Ribeiro de Almeida, emphasised the deep civilisational links and growing cooperation between the two nations across sectors including renewable energy, science and technology, defence and agriculture.

Academic partnerships and global outlook
Dr Francisco Martins highlighted the role of universities in driving long-term collaboration through joint research and student exchanges.
Delivering the keynote address, Sibi George spoke of evolving India–Europe relations and highlighted growing political engagement, technological cooperation and people-to-people ties, along with progress on broader frameworks such as the India–EU Free Trade Agreement.
The inaugural session also saw the launch of the second edition of the Hindi–Portuguese–Hindi dictionary.
Dialogue on key global themes
The event features thematic sessions on India–EU engagement, shared history and cultural heritage, sustainable development, trade relations and linguistic cooperation.
Discussions are focused on multilateralism, climate action and the role of language and culture in strengthening international partnerships.
Strong ties with Portugal
In a virtual address, Puneet R Kundal noted Portugal’s unique position as the only EU country signatory to Nalanda University, underlining the depth of bilateral engagement across diplomacy, academia and culture.
He expressed confidence in Nalanda’s growing global role and highlighted Portugal as a key partner in its academic and institutional development.
Passport services on campus
On the sidelines of the event, a Passport Seva Mobile Van Camp was organised on campus by the Regional Passport Office, Patna, under the Ministry of External Affairs initiative to provide doorstep services.
The camp was inaugurated by Sibi George and Sachin Chaturvedi, aimed at improving access to passport services for the university community.
Officials said the dialogue reflects a broader push to strengthen international cooperation while positioning Nalanda University as a global hub for academic and diplomatic engagement.
