Nawada/Patna: A herd of wild elephants caused damage in parts of Roh block in Nawada district, destroying property and triggering panic among residents, officials and villagers said.
According to local residents, the elephants entered the village late at night and moved through residential and agricultural areas, damaging houses, crops and public infrastructure. The incident has left villagers fearful, with many staying awake through the night to monitor elephant movement.
School and anganwadi centre damaged
Villagers said the herd damaged a government middle school and an anganwadi centre during the rampage. Doors and other materials in the buildings were reportedly broken.
Residents said they managed to drive the elephants out of the village by raising an alarm and gathering in groups.
Crops and household goods affected
Several farmers reported losses after the elephants trampled standing crops and damaged stored grain and household belongings.
Locals said fear among residents remains high, particularly among women and children, with many reluctant to step outside after dark.
Villagers accuse forest department of negligence
Residents accused the forest department of failing to put in place long-term measures despite repeated elephant movement in the region.
Villagers demanded that officials ensure the safe return of the elephants to forest areas and strengthen protection for nearby settlements.
Residents keep night watch
People in the affected villages said they have been keeping vigil overnight to prevent further damage.
Forest department teams are monitoring the area, officials said, though villagers warned that delays in preventive action could lead to greater loss of life and property.
