Nawada/Patna: A shocking case of mob violence has emerged from Nawada district in Bihar, where an elderly couple was accused of practising witchcraft and subjected to barbaric assault. The 70-year-old husband was beaten to death, while his wife remains in a critical condition at Hisua Community Health Centre.
The couple, residents of the Hisua police station area, were humiliated before being attacked. Villagers forcibly shaved their heads, smeared lime on them, and paraded them with garlands of shoes and slippers. They were reportedly made to drink urine before being brutally assaulted with sticks and rods.
Despite a distress call being made to the police emergency helpline 112 on Tuesday night, officers allegedly left the scene without intervening after witnessing the crowd. The local police station was not alerted, and by Wednesday morning, the violence escalated fatally.
While the husband succumbed to the assault, the mob allegedly prepared to burn his wife alive alongside his body. Timely intervention by Hisua police prevented further tragedy. “The body and the injured woman have been recovered from near the crematorium. Seeing the seriousness of the case, the police have intensified the investigation and action has been started by identifying the culprits,” said Rupa Kumari, sub-inspector of Hisua police station.
