Patna: The Bihar deputy chief minister, Vijay Kumar Sinha, visited the family of a deceased NEET aspirant in Jehanabad on Tuesday evening, assuring them that those responsible for her death would be brought to justice.
Sinha met the student’s parents at their residence, where the girl’s mother broke down in tears and appealed for action. Following the meeting, the deputy chief minister said he had spoken to the state’s director general of police and directed that the investigation be expedited. “The culprits must not escape under any circumstances,” he said, adding that the harshest punishment would be sought for those found guilty.
After Sinha returned to Patna, the student’s mother spoke to reporters, alleging harassment by the police and expressing anguish over the handling of the case. She said the family was being questioned late at night and subjected to repeated medical tests. “The police come to our house after midnight and interrogate us as if we have killed our own daughter,” she said. “We are being threatened and accused.”
The mother said she had been assured by the deputy chief minister that justice would be delivered but questioned how long the family could endure the ordeal. “If my daughter does not get justice, what is the meaning of our lives?” she asked.
Referring to her daughter, she said: “She was not just my daughter, she was like my son. The Lakshmi of our house has left us.” She also alleged that her daughter had been staying at a private hostel and named individuals she believed should be investigated, though police have not confirmed any such links.
The mother also mentioned the station house officer of Chitragupta Nagar police station, saying the officer was familiar with the family and that her daughter had addressed her as “mother”.
Speaking to the media later, Sinha said the case was being monitored closely by the state government under the direction of the chief minister, Nitish Kumar. “This is not just about one family. It concerns the dignity of a daughter of Bihar,” he said. “If it is established that the crime involved sexual assault followed by murder, the strictest possible action will be taken.”
He confirmed that a special investigation team (SIT) had been constituted and that all aspects of the case were under examination. “No matter how powerful or influential the accused may be, they will not be spared,” Sinha said. “The truth will come out very soon.”
Police officials said the investigation was continuing and declined to comment on specific allegations, citing the sensitivity of the case.
