Patna: Nepal’s armed police have seized 80.9kg of cannabis from an Indian-registered car near the Indo-Nepal border, foiling what authorities believe was an attempt to smuggle narcotics into India.
The seizure took place early on Sunday morning in Nepal’s Sarlahi district, close to Laxmipur village under Balra municipality. According to officials, the vehicle was heading towards India when security personnel attempted to stop it for inspection.
Police said the driver abandoned the car and fled on foot after it collided with an electricity pole while trying to evade the checkpoint. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a concealed compartment, from which officers recovered 80kg and 900 grams of cannabis.
The operation was conducted at around 3 am by a team from the Malangwa armed police unit, acting on specific intelligence inputs and led by Deputy Superintendent Leelabahadur Karki. The car, bearing a Bihar registration number, has been seized along with the contraband.
Authorities said the recovered cannabis and the vehicle would be handed over to the district police office in Malangwa for further legal proceedings. Efforts are underway to identify and trace the absconding driver.
While officials have not commented on wider networks, local sources in the border region say drug trafficking remains a persistent challenge along the porous Indo-Nepal frontier. Police have stressed that investigations are ongoing and cautioned against speculation until formal inquiries are completed.
