Muzaffarpur: The Bihar state cabinet has approved the construction of a new 3-lane bridge across the Gandak river, connecting Fatehabad in Muzaffarpur with Chanchalia in the Saraiya block. The project, costing Rs 5,89,04,78,000, is set to be a major milestone in the development of North Bihar.
The bridge will stretch 2,280 metres in length and 15.55 metres in width. A 2,200-metre access road will also be built to ensure smoother travel. Officials say the bridge will significantly reduce travel distance, cutting the current 49 km route via Rewa Ghat to just 10 km.
Local residents and leaders have long demanded the project, describing it as the fulfilment of a 15-year-old demand. The bridge will ease daily commutes for work, education, and medical needs, particularly during the monsoon when river crossings are challenging.
Economists and local authorities anticipate a boost to the regional economy. Farmers will be able to deliver crops more quickly and cheaply, traders will benefit from faster freight transportation, and small industries are expected to strengthen. During construction, hundreds of people will gain temporary employment, while post-completion, opportunities for tourism, business, and education are expected to expand.
The government emphasises that the project aims to reduce regional disparities and support balanced development between rural and urban areas. Residents hope the bridge will enhance connectivity, improve livelihoods, and provide better opportunities for future generations.
