Patna: A newborn girl, estimated to be around 10 days old, was rescued after being found abandoned inside a coach of a passenger train travelling from Patna to Gaya on Sunday evening. Passengers who discovered the infant handed her over to the police at Punpun railway station, leading to an investigation by railway authorities.
According to police, passengers heard a baby crying inside one of the train coaches between 7.30 pm and 8 pm. After searching the compartment, they found the infant wrapped in cloth and lying unattended on a seat.
Passengers reportedly looked for the child’s parents or guardians inside the train, but no one came forward to claim her.
Passengers Hand Infant to Police
When the train reached Punpun station, passengers took the baby to the local police station and informed authorities about the incident.
Punpun Station House Officer (SHO) Baby Kumari said the infant was immediately taken into police care and provided with milk and initial assistance.
The police also informed the Government Railway Police (GRP) and began inquiries with passengers and vendors at nearby stations to gather information about the circumstances under which the child was abandoned.
Medical Examination Finds Baby Healthy
Authorities said the newborn appeared to be around 10 days old.
Following legal procedures, the infant was handed over on Monday to the Patna Child Welfare Committee (CWC) with assistance from the Taregana GRP. A medical examination conducted at a hospital found the child to be healthy and safe.
The infant has been placed in a protective care home under the supervision of child welfare authorities.
CCTV Footage Under Examination
Police officials said railway authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from stations between Patna and Punpun to identify the person or persons responsible for leaving the child in the train coach.
SHO Baby Kumari said the manner in which the infant was wrapped and left inside the compartment suggests she may have been deliberately abandoned. However, investigators have not yet established the motive or identified any suspects.
Railway police said efforts are ongoing to trace those responsible and take action in accordance with the law.
