Patna: Bihar is witnessing contrasting weather conditions, with several districts in southern parts of the state reeling under intense heat and humidity, while northern districts are experiencing rainfall and thunderstorms, providing relief from the scorching temperatures.
On Monday, temperatures crossed the 41°C mark in eight districts, including Patna. Rohtas recorded the highest temperature in the state at 43.3°C, followed by Buxar at 42.7°C and Kaimur at 42.4°C.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a rain alert for 24 districts across Bihar and warned of heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours.
Five Family Members Killed in Sitamarhi Tragedy
Amid the changing weather conditions, a tragic incident was reported from Sitamarhi district on Monday night. A peepal tree uprooted during a thunderstorm and heavy rain collapsed onto a mud house in Revasi Dhanushi Tola under Riga police station limits.
Five members of the same family lost their lives after being trapped under the debris.
The deceased have been identified as Pooja Devi (28), wife of Sikandar Sahni; her son Rajkumar (7); daughter Shivani (5); and one-month-old son Liger Kumar, who died on the spot.
Another son, two-year-old Veerbhadra Kumar, was critically injured and rushed to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Monsoon Advancing Across Eastern India
The southwest monsoon is advancing rapidly and has already covered large parts of eastern India. Increased moisture inflow from the Bay of Bengal is significantly influencing weather conditions in Bihar.
According to meteorologists, monsoon activity is expected to intensify further over the coming days, leading to a noticeable increase in rainfall across the state, particularly in north Bihar.
Heavy Rainfall Alert for Northern Districts
The weather department has issued a heavy rainfall alert for Araria, Kishanganj and Supaul districts on June 10 and 11. Wind speeds may reach up to 60 kmph in these areas.
Thunderstorms and rainfall activity are expected to intensify across most districts of north Bihar on June 12 and 13. After June 13, widespread rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely across the state, bringing much-needed relief from the ongoing heatwave conditions.
While southern Bihar is expected to continue experiencing hot and humid weather for the next two days, temperatures are likely to gradually decline after June 10.
Why Is Bihar Experiencing Two Different Weather Patterns?
Weather experts say Bihar is currently under the influence of two contrasting weather systems. Southern and western parts of the state continue to experience hot and dry winds, while northern and eastern regions are receiving moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal.
As a result, some districts are facing heatwave-like conditions, whereas others are witnessing thunderstorms, lightning and rainfall.
Pre-Monsoon Activity Underway
Meteorologists have clarified that the current rainfall is largely part of pre-monsoon activity. Continuous moisture inflow from the Bay of Bengal, combined with intense surface heating across several parts of Bihar, is creating atmospheric instability.
This is leading to the formation of thunderclouds during the afternoon and evening hours, resulting in thunderstorms and rainfall in several districts. Experts believe this transitional phase is likely to become more active as the southwest monsoon advances further into the region.
Patna Weather Forecast
Patna is expected to experience hot and humid conditions during the day on Tuesday. However, partial cloud cover is likely by evening or night, with chances of light rain and thunderstorms in some areas.
The maximum temperature is expected to remain around 40°C, although gusty winds may provide some relief from the prevailing heat. om the prolonged heatwave.
