Patna: Nishant Kumar, the son of Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, visited Mahavir Mandir near Patna Junction shortly after formally joining the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)), offering prayers and seeking blessings as he marked the beginning of his political journey.
Speaking to reporters outside the temple, Nishant Kumar confirmed that he had taken membership of the party and expressed hope that the organisation would continue to enjoy the trust of the public. He said the JD(U) functions like a family and added that he would work to carry forward the development work undertaken during his father’s tenure. “I will try to fulfil the responsibilities given to me by the party and continue serving the people,” he said.
His entry into the party comes amid ongoing political shifts in the state and has triggered speculation that he could be given a larger role within the party organisation in the future. Party leaders have welcomed the move, describing it as an opportunity to strengthen the organisation with younger leadership.
Following his temple visit, Nishant Kumar also went to the High Court Mazar, where he offered a ceremonial chadar in a gesture reflecting the inclusive approach long associated with his father’s politics. Observers noted his humility during the visit, where he greeted people present at the site and sought blessings from elders.
Speaking to the media there, Nishant said he had come to seek blessings from Allah as well, stressing that he intended to follow the principle of respecting all religions. “My father has always believed in taking every religion along, and I will try to uphold the same spirit,” he said. He added that he plans to meet district presidents of the party and travel across the state to strengthen the organisation and develop future strategies.
State minister Shrawon Kumar welcomed Nishant Kumar’s entry into the party, saying JD(U) leaders had been urging him for nearly two years to step into politics. “We have been requesting that Nishant, as a young leader, should join public life. We are glad that he has finally joined the party,” he said.
He added that politics is a field full of possibilities and that Nishant Kumar’s arrival has already generated enthusiasm among supporters. “Chief minister Nitish Kumar has always been dedicated to the development of the state. We believe Nishant Kumar will carry forward and complete the unfinished work of his father,” he said.
