Patna: Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar is expected to resign on Tuesday afternoon, bringing his current tenure to an end after the state cabinet formally recommended its own dissolution at a final meeting chaired by him earlier in the day.
The meeting, widely seen as the last of the outgoing government, concluded with ministers expressing gratitude to Kumar, who has led the state for much of the past two decades. Officials said the chief minister is likely to meet governor Syed Ata Hasnain at around 3.15pm to submit his resignation.
The developments come as Kumar, who was sworn in for this term on November 20, 2025, prepares to transition to his new role as a member of the Rajya Sabha. If confirmed, his resignation will mark the end of a tenure lasting just 145 days, one of the shortest of his political career.
Political activity intensified through the morning at the chief minister’s residence in Patna, with senior leaders including JD(U) working president Sanjay Jha and Union minister Lalan Singh arriving for consultations. Bihar’s deputy chief minister Samrat Choudhary also joined the discussions. After a brief closed-door meeting, Kumar and Choudhary left together.
The two leaders later paid tribute to B. R. Ambedkar, garlanding his statue before Kumar proceeded to the cabinet meeting that would set in motion the day’s events.
Attention will now turn to a meeting of the NDA legislative party scheduled for 4pm, where a successor is expected to be chosen. Senior BJP leader Shivraj Singh Chouhan will attend as an observer, overseeing the process to decide the next chief minister.
