Patna: The convoy of Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, long associated with modest cars and a pared-back lifestyle, is set to undergo a significant change after the state government approved the purchase of four high-security, bulletproof Range Rover SUVs.
Officials said the decision was taken purely on security grounds, following assessments related to VVIP movement and the chief minister’s expanding public engagements. Preparations for the acquisition are under way, marking the first time that a high-end luxury SUV will be inducted into Kumar’s official convoy.
Until now, the chief minister has largely travelled in electric vehicles or cars manufactured by Indian companies, in keeping with his public image of austerity. T
According to government sources, the Range Rover model selected for procurement is among the safest vehicles in its class, featuring a bulletproof body, advanced communication systems and specialised security technology. Similar vehicles are widely used by national and international leaders holding sensitive offices.
Approval for the purchase was granted in July 2025 for individuals under Z+ security cover. A total of Rs 11,17,29,412 has been sanctioned for four vehicles, priced at Rs 2,79,32,353 each. Sources indicated that, apart from the chief minister, one of the vehicles will also be allocated to deputy chief minister Samrat Choudhary.
