Nalanda: Chief Minister Nitish Kumar visited Rajgir in Nalanda district to personally review the condition of the town’s famous ponds and development projects. During his visit, he inspected the Gangaji reservoir at Ghoda Katora in Giriyak, along with the ropeway area, the Vaitarni River channel and the historic Brahmakund. Officials informed him that water flow in many ponds, including the well-known Ganga–Jamuna Kund, has almost stopped because of recent construction work and lack of sufficient rainfall.
Taking the matter seriously, the chief minister expressed concern that the drying ponds could create problems for both pilgrims and local residents. He said these water bodies are an important part of Rajgir’s religious and cultural life, and their condition cannot be ignored. Kumar instructed the administration to immediately identify the reasons behind the blockage and take practical steps to restore the natural flow of water as soon as possible.
Later, the chief minister held a review meeting with senior officials at the International Convention Center. He asked departments to work together so that development activities do not damage traditional water systems. He also directed officers to ensure that devotees visiting Rajgir face no inconvenience and that proper facilities, cleanliness and safety arrangements are maintained at all religious sites.
The visit comes at an important time, as the Purushottam Maas Mela is scheduled to be held in Rajgir in May. Thousands of devotees are expected to arrive during the fair. Keeping this in mind, the administration has been placed on alert and instructed to complete all restoration and preparation work well in advance. Officials said regular monitoring will now take place to ensure the ponds are refilled and ready before the festival begins.
