Patna: A doctor from Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) has accused Patna police officers of assaulting him and his driver during an incident at the Digha checkpost on Sunday night. A written complaint has been filed against six police personnel, including sub-inspector Upendra Sah. Police say complaints have been submitted by both sides and an investigation is underway.
Dr B. N. Chaturvedi said he was travelling through the checkpost with his driver, Rajkumar, when their vehicle became stuck behind a truck reportedly attempting to travel on the wrong side of the road. Chaturvedi claimed the police were taking money to let the truck pass. When Rajkumar asked the truck to reverse, an altercation began.
According to the complaint, SI Upendra Sah grabbed the driver by the collar and multiple officers allegedly assaulted him. The doctor said that when he stepped out of the car, he too was beaten. Rajkumar sustained injuries, including bleeding from the nose and marks on his neck, Chaturvedi said, adding that his driver’s mobile phone and Rs 22,000 in cash were taken during the clash.
The pair said they were kept waiting at Digha police station for two hours before the phone was returned. The missing cash was denied by officers, they added, alleging pressure was put on them to settle the matter informally.
Police said they are reviewing CCTV footage and speaking to witnesses. Mohibulla Ansari, Law and Order SDPO 2, confirmed that appeals had been submitted from both sides. “The matter is being investigated. Strict action will be taken if anyone is found guilty,” he said. The investigation remains ongoing.
