Patna: Patna has introduced a new regulation requiring CCTV cameras to be installed in all newly constructed buildings, including commercial establishments, apartment complexes and private homes, as part of efforts to boost public safety. Municipal officials have stated that building map approvals will now be withheld unless plans include camera installation.
The Patna Municipal Corporation will enforce the provision during map approvals, commercial licensing processes and holding tax assessments. A formal proposal outlining the measure has been sent to the relevant department, with officials describing the move as essential for improving law and order in the city.
Cameras to be installed across remaining police stations
The decision comes alongside an expansion of surveillance infrastructure under Patna Smart City Limited, which has begun installing additional cameras at key locations. Authorities have also ordered immediate installation of CCTV systems in police stations and outposts where they are not yet available. Once installed, maintenance will be carried out jointly by Patna Smart City and local station heads.
Municipal officials have recommended preparing a comprehensive list of commercial buildings, public facilities, shopping malls and residential complexes across police jurisdictions to ensure compliance with the new mandate.
Measure aims to curb thefts in vacant apartments
Amid rising reports of theft from unoccupied flats, the corporation has also urged private property owners to install cameras around their premises. Police stations have been asked to maintain updated contact details of resident welfare association members, guards and building secretaries to improve coordination during emergencies.
All proposals connected to the new surveillance initiative are currently awaiting departmental approval. Officials hope the decision will deter criminal activity and strengthen real-time response capability across Patna’s urban areas.
