Patna: The district administration in Patna has ordered a complete suspension of private boat services on the river Ganga on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, citing concerns over overcrowding and the risk of accidents at busy river ghats.
The decision follows a sharp rise in visitor numbers during the holiday period, when large crowds gather along the ghats and many people cross the river for picnics and leisure activities. Officials say private boat operators often overload vessels during such periods, increasing the danger to passengers.
Under the order issued by the district magistrate, all private boats and vessels will remain suspended on December 25 until 6am. For New Year, operations will be prohibited from 6am on December 31 until noon on January 1, 2026.
The administration said previous incidents of boat accidents on the Ganga had informed the precautionary move. “Overloading and negligence during peak festive days pose a serious threat to public safety,” an official statement said.
The order has been issued under section 163 of the Indian Civil Defence Code, giving authorities powers to enforce restrictions in the interest of public safety and law and order. Officials warned that strict action would be taken against anyone found violating the ban.
Police and administrative teams will be deployed at key ghats to monitor the situation and prevent unauthorised boat operations. The administration has urged the public to cooperate with the restrictions and prioritise safety during the holiday celebrations.
