Patna: In a stunning turn of events in Bihar's political landscape, Chirag Paswan, once betrayed and deserted, has risen as a formidable figure ahead of the impending Lok Sabha elections. As the state gears up for the impending Lok Sabha elections, Chirag's triumph over adversaries, both familial and political, marks a significant shift in the dynamics of power. Chirag, aged 41, has endured a tumultuous journey, grappling with the survival of his own political career and his party's relevance. His recent victory comes as his party secures five crucial seats in Bihar for the forthcoming polls, a stark contrast to his estranged uncle, Pashupati Kumar Paras, who faces political oblivion after being left empty-handed in the seat allocation process within the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The saga traces back to Chirag's decision to sever ties with the BJP ahead of the 2020 Assembly elections in Bihar, triggering a prolonged struggle for political survival. The rupture intensified when five of the six Lok Sabha members of the undivided Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), led by Paras, orchestrated a political coup in June 2021, forming a splinter faction named the "Rashtriya Lok Janshakti Party (RLJP)" under Paras's leadership, claiming rightful political lineage to the late Ram Vilas Paswan. Undeterred by these setbacks, Chirag embarked on an arduous journey across Bihar, rallying his supporters and reconciling with his estranged family over the course of three years. Despite his continued opposition to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's policies, Chirag reiterated unwavering support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, echoing the words of his late father, who likened him to a lion's cub destined to navigate the jungle of politics. The narrative took a decisive turn in July 2023, as Chirag formally announced his return to the BJP-led NDA, culminating in a poignant embrace from Prime Minister Modi during an NDA allies' meeting in Delhi. This reunion not only solidified Chirag's political identity but also reaffirmed his commitment to carrying forward his father's legacy. The culmination of Chirag's triumph came with the announcement of seat-sharing arrangements within the NDA in Bihar on March 18. With the BJP and Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal (United) positioned to contest 17 and 16 Lok Sabha seats respectively, Chirag's Lok Janshakti Party secured five seats, alongside allocations to other NDA partners. However, the aftermath of this political maneuver saw a disgruntled Paras tendering his resignation from PM Modi's cabinet, citing grievances over his party's exclusion from seat allocations. His decision sets the stage for a potential electoral showdown between uncle and nephew in the Hajipur constituency, adding a layer of intrigue to Bihar's political landscape. On March 20, the Central Parliamentary Board meeting of Chirag's LJP (Ram Vilas) convened in Delhi, formally endorsing Chirag Paswan as the candidate for the prestigious Hajipur seat. This announcement holds profound significance as Hajipur stands as the political bastion of his late father, Ram Vilas Paswan. As the NDA aims to replicate its electoral success from the 2019 elections, the exclusion of Paras's demands may spark internal discord, potentially paving the way for an LJP versus LJP confrontation in various constituencies, thereby influencing the NDA's electoral prospects. The resurgence of Chirag Paswan, once on the brink of political oblivion, underscores the volatile and intricate nature of Bihar's political ecosystem, setting the stage for a gripping electoral battle in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
