Patna: Independent Purnea MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav was lodged in Beur Central Jail on Saturday evening, hours after being remanded to judicial custody by a Patna court in connection with a 31-year-old fraud case.
Yadav was detained around midnight on Friday after police arrived at his residence in Mandiri, Patna. He was initially taken to the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) and later shifted to the Indira Gandhi Institute of Cardiology (IGIC) for ECG and echocardiography tests on Saturday morning, officials said.
After undergoing medical examinations, Yadav was produced before a MP/MLA court, which ordered two days of judicial custody following treatment. He was subsequently taken to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) and then transferred to Beur jail around 5 pm.
The arrest relates to a case registered in 1995 at Patna’s Shastri Nagar police station (Case No. 552/1995; GR No. 775/03). The dispute stems from a house rented in 1994, the year Yadav was elected to parliament for the first time. Court records show that cognisance was taken on April 30, 1996, and charges were framed on September 11, 1998.
Police said the arrest followed Yadav’s repeated failure, along with two co-accused, to appear before the court despite multiple summons issued over the years.
The case originates from a complaint filed by the landlord, Manoj Bihari Lal, who alleged that Yadav had rented the Patna property for residential use but later began operating his political office from the premises. Lal claimed that the frequent influx of supporters caused persistent disruption, prompting him to ask the occupants to vacate. When they refused, he approached the court.
Yadav’s bail application is expected to be heard on Monday.
