Patna: Purnea MP Pappu Yadav has demanded an immediate investigation into unlicensed girls’ hostels in Bihar, following the death of a NEET student at a private hostel near Gandhi Maidan in Patna.
Visiting the hostel on Tuesday, Yadav raised serious concerns about the safety and regulation of girls’ accommodation in the state. He said many hostels are operating without licences or adherence to basic safety standards, including fire precautions, CCTV surveillance, secure entry and exit systems, and the presence of wardens. “Samrat Babu, the girls are scared, please save them,” he told Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, urging swift administrative action.
The MP referred specifically to the Shambhu Hostel, where the NEET student had been staying, calling the incident indicative of systemic failures rather than an isolated tragedy. Yadav questioned the legality of the hostel’s construction and raised concerns over its ownership, noting that a peon had reportedly acquired property valued at crores of rupees. He described this as a serious financial and administrative irregularity.
Yadav called for a high-level and impartial inquiry and warned that failure to act would prompt him to launch a public movement from the streets to Parliament. He added that the safety of female students could not be compromised and stressed that influential individuals implicated in such cases must be held accountable to prevent similar incidents in the future.
