Patna: Parbatta MLA Dr Sanjeev Kumar, a long-time member of Janata Dal (United), has resigned from the party and formally joined the Rashtriya Janata Dal, dealing a setback to chief minister Nitish Kumar ahead of the assembly elections.
The Khagaria district legislator met opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav at his Patna residence on Sunday, where he was welcomed into the party with a shawl. Kumar, who had been with the JDU for more than two decades, said he had “lost faith” in the party and believed Bihar would find a “better direction” under Yadav’s leadership.

Earlier in the day, Kumar was formally inducted at a rally in Gogri, Khagaria, attended by thousands of RJD workers and senior party leaders, including Alauli MLA Ramvriksha Sada and Khagaria MLA Chhatrapati Yadav.
Kumar praised several social welfare schemes he said were pushed by Yadav, such as the Behan Yojana, expanded old-age pensions and additional free electricity units. “I will now work with even greater dedication to serve the people under his leadership,” he said.
His defection was met with enthusiasm among RJD cadres in the Parbatta constituency, as the party seeks to consolidate its position in the run-up to the polls.
