Patna: The Bihar government is set to develop its largest greenfield satellite township near the state capital, with the proposed Pataliputra Township spanning more than 81,000 acres and featuring major infrastructure projects including a Sports City and a Fintech hub.
The township forms part of a broader plan to build 11 satellite cities across Bihar, aimed at easing pressure on existing urban centres and promoting planned urbanisation.
Largest Township In The State
The proposed Pataliputra Township will cover around 81,730 acres under its “special zone”, with an additional 1,010 acres identified as the core development area where initial infrastructure will be built.
Officials said the township will be located in the Punpun–Fatuha belt on the outskirts of Patna, making it the largest such urban expansion project in Bihar.
Major Infrastructure Planned
The project is designed as a modern urban hub, incorporating key facilities such as a Fintech City, Sports City, logistics hub and a judicial academy.
It will also be integrated with major transport infrastructure, including the Amas–Darbhanga Expressway, which will pass through the township, and a planned six-lane ring road within the area. A stretch of the Patna–Gaya–Dobhi highway will also fall within its limits.
Strategic Connectivity
The core zone is expected to be located about 13 km from Patna city and around 21 km from Maurya Lok, the capital’s commercial centre. It will be approximately 20 km from Patna Junction railway station and 24 km from Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport.
The site is also close to the Bihta–Sarmera road and the proposed Jat Dumri railway junction, further strengthening connectivity.

Land Transactions Banned
The Urban Development and Housing Department has imposed a ban on the sale, purchase and construction of land within both the special and core zones until the township’s master plan is finalised and notified.
Officials said the restriction is intended to prevent unregulated development and ensure that the township evolves in a planned manner.
Part Of Statewide Urban Expansion Plan
The Pataliputra Township is among 11 proposed satellite townships across Bihar, including projects in Darbhanga (Mithila), Chhapra (Saran), Sonepur (Hariharnath), Bhagalpur (Vikramshila), Muzaffarpur (Tirhut), Gaya (Magadh), Purnia, Sitamarhi (Sitapuram), Munger (Anga) and Saharsa (Kosi).
Authorities said the initiative aims to create new urban hubs equipped with modern amenities, generate employment and support long-term economic growth while reducing congestion in existing cities.
