Patna: The Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated a citywide campaign to tackle the growing threat of mosquito-borne diseases in areas affected by waterlogging during the monsoon. The civic body’s special drive includes rapid drainage efforts followed by the spraying of anti-larval solutions and lime bleaching in all affected zones.
In a directive issued on Tuesday, Municipal Commissioner Animesh Kumar Parashar instructed all executive officers to ensure that spraying is carried out immediately after water is drained.
“Given the health risk posed by stagnant water, especially during monsoon, this campaign is being treated with utmost urgency,” said a PMC spokesperson. The initiative aims to reduce the spread of vector-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria.
Rapid response to waterlogging
Special PMC teams have been deployed across Patna, and officials say that more than 300 waterlogged sites have already been cleared over the past two days. The campaign will continue until all identified areas are addressed.
In addition to spraying, municipal workers are being tasked with educating the public about the dangers of water accumulation and how to prevent mosquito breeding. Residents are being urged to ensure their rooftops, pots, and other open containers do not collect rainwater.
Awareness and accountability measures
The PMC maintains a zone-wise anti-larva logbook, requiring not only documentation of spraying activity but also signatures from householders where spraying has taken place. These records are subject to cross-verification by headquarters, ensuring greater accountability.
“The public’s cooperation is critical,” said the PMC spokesperson. “We are not only cleaning and spraying, but also informing citizens of the precautions they must take to avoid illness.”
24×7 helpline for complaints
To support the effort, the PMC has activated a round-the-clock helpline—155304—through which citizens can report waterlogging or request anti-larval spraying in their localities. Officials have assured swift response to any complaints lodged via this number.
The PMC reiterated its commitment to maintaining hygiene and preventing disease outbreaks during the monsoon season. “Together with citizens, we aim to keep Patna safe, clean and disease-free,” the spokesperson added.
