Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today conducted an inspection of the ongoing development works in the Barabar (Vanavar) area of Makhdumpur block, Jehanabad district, issuing key directives to district officials and reaffirming the cultural significance of the ancient site.
During his visit, the Chief Minister reviewed preparations for the annual Shravani Mela at the revered Baba Siddheshwarnath Mahadev Temple, situated atop Vanavar mountain. He interacted with devotees performing the traditional jalabhishek ritual and instructed the district administration to ensure seamless facilities for pilgrims, particularly during the high-footfall month of Shravan. Locals welcomed Kumar warmly, and he took the opportunity to hear public grievances, directing the District Magistrate to address them promptly.
Highlighting the historical significance of the site, Kumar said, “The Vanavar caves represent the ancient cultural heritage of India. Their development is crucial not just for preservation, but also to promote tourism in the region.”

The Barabar Caves, located in Jehanabad district, are among the oldest surviving rock-cut caves in the Indian subcontinent. Dating back to the 3rd century BCE, they were commissioned during the reign of Emperor Ashoka and his successor Dasharatha, primarily for ascetics of the Ajivika sect — a once-prominent religious order. The site features four principal caves: Karnachaupar, Lomas Rishi, Sudama, and Vishwajyoti. The Lomas Rishi and Sudama caves are particularly noted for their architectural brilliance, with the former’s chaitya-style facade influencing later Buddhist cave architecture.
The caves’ interiors are renowned for their mirror-like polish and acoustic properties — a testament to the advanced stone-finishing techniques of the Mauryan era, making them an ideal setting for meditation.
Kumar had earlier committed to the holistic development of Barabar Caves during his 2025 ‘Pragati Yatra’, announcing a Rs 50 crore plan aimed at boosting infrastructure and tourism. The scheme includes construction of access stairways, enhanced tourist amenities, and the reconstruction of a mini museum.
