Patna: Patna is set to get its first multi-level automatic bike parking facilities in an effort to tackle chronic congestion and haphazard roadside parking in the city.
Patna Smart City Limited has announced that three automated parking units will be built at Kadamkuan Wedding Zone, the multimodal hub near GPO Golambar, and Maurya campus – some of the busiest areas in the capital. Designs for the structures have been finalised and work is expected to begin this month, with completion scheduled within three months.
Each steel structure, measuring nine metres by seven metres, will be able to accommodate 96 two-wheelers, making space for a total of 288 bikes across the three sites. The entire system will be automated, offering a quicker and safer alternative to roadside parking.
The project will be carried out by Reena Engineering Company at a cost of about Rs 1.14 crore per unit, amounting to a total of Rs 3.42 crore. Officials said construction had initially been planned for August 15 but was delayed by site verification and agency checks.
Illegal and chaotic parking has long been a challenge in Patna, with bikes frequently left on main roads and narrow lanes, worsening traffic jams and leaving vehicles vulnerable to theft or damage. Officials said the new facilities, part of the Smart City Project, would help ease congestion and reduce the burden on traffic police.
Priya Saurabh, a spokesperson for Patna Smart City Limited, said that if the initiative proves successful, the model could be replicated in other parts of the city. “This project is a step towards providing Patna with a modern and safe parking system, similar to that in larger cities,” she said.
