Patna: One of Patna’s oldest transport landmarks is preparing to enter a new chapter.
The historic Bankipur Bus Stand near Gandhi Maidan — once crowded with buses, passengers and long-distance travellers — is set to be demolished to make way for a five-star Taj hotel project.
Officials said preparations were underway to vacate the premises within the next month.
A Transport Landmark Since 1959
Bankipur Bus Stand occupies a prominent place in Bihar’s transport history.
Established alongside the formation of the Bihar State Road Transport Corporation in 1959, the depot served for decades as one of the primary hubs for buses operating across Patna, neighbouring districts and long-distance intercity routes.
Spread across approximately 3.5 acres near Gandhi Maidan and Kargil Chowk, the site became synonymous with public transport in the state capital.
New Bus Terminal Planned Along JP Ganga Path
Authorities are now planning to shift the bus stand to a new location along JP Ganga Path.
A five-acre site north of the riverfront road has reportedly been identified for the proposed terminal, and land surveys have already been conducted.
The BSRTC has written to the district administration seeking formal allotment of the land.
Until the new terminal becomes operational, bus services will continue from alternative locations, including:
- the Multi-Modal Hub
- the depot at Phulwari Sharif
- the Inter-State Bus Terminal Bairiya for private buses
Some government buses are also being parked temporarily near JP Ganga Path before being brought to Kargil Chowk during operational hours.
Taj Hotel Project Under PPP Model
The land currently occupied by the bus stand has been earmarked for a luxury Taj hotel project.
In March, the Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation Limited signed a memorandum of understanding with Sarga Hotel Private Limited under a public-private partnership model.
The hotel will be developed by Indian Hotels Company Limited, which operates the Taj brand.

500-Room Luxury Hotel Planned
Project officials said the Detailed Project Report and 3D design renderings had already been prepared.
Construction is planned in two phases:
- 350 rooms in the first phase
- 150 rooms in the second phase
The first phase is expected to be completed within four years, with hotel operations targeted to begin by January 2030.
Officials described Bankipur as an ideal location for a premium hospitality project because of its proximity to the River Ganga, Gandhi Maidan and the Samrat Ashok Convention Centre.
Once the bus stand premises are vacated, project authorities will seek a No Objection Certificate from the Patna Municipal Corporation before construction begins.
