Patna: Patna will witness significant traffic restrictions over the next two days as part of the city’s preparations for the Chhath festival. Authorities have announced the closure of several major roads to ensure smooth movement for devotees heading to the ghats for evening and morning offerings.
The traffic restrictions will be in effect on October 27 and 28, with Ashoka Rajpath and JP Ganga Path completely closed to general traffic. Vehicles will not be allowed on these roads from 12 noon to 7 pm on October 27 and from 2 am to 8 am on October 28. Only emergency and administrative vehicles will be permitted during these hours.
Key traffic diversions and closures
Entry to Ashoka Rajpath will be sealed from all directions. Parking for devotees’ vehicles will be arranged at Khajanchi Road, Patna College, and Science College campuses. Only vehicles carrying Chhath devotees will be permitted between Kargil Chowk and Shahpur.
Traffic between Digha Mor and Ashiana Mor (north to south) will remain closed from 2 pm to 6:30 pm on October 27 and from 3 am to 6 am on October 28. During this period, vehicles will be diverted via Ramjichak Mor to Nehru Path through Canal Road.
The JP Ganga Path (Marine Drive) will also be closed to all vehicles in both directions, from Digha Golambar to Didarganj. Vehicles arriving at Digha will exit via the LCT underpass. Those heading to JP Setu East Ghat and Gate 93 Ghat must use the eastern side of the railway bridge and park in designated areas.
For other ghats, underpasses will serve as entry and exit points. Vehicles bound for Kurji Ghat will enter from Kurji Mor, passing under the JP Ganga Path to reach the north-side parking area. Similarly, vehicles going to Pehalwan Ghat and Bans Ghat will travel north from Ashoka Rajpath through the underpass to designated parking spaces near the Ganga.
Only devotees’ vehicles will be permitted through the Ramjichak railway overbridge (ROB) towards JP Setu, while general vehicles will use the lower route. Parking for vehicles coming from Digha to Ashoka Rajpath will be arranged near the northern end of Patli Path.
Restrictions on Atal Path and entry of heavy vehicles
Traffic on Atal Path will be restricted for the general public from 11 am to 8 pm on October 27 and from 2 am to 9 am on October 28. Only emergency vehicles will be allowed to travel towards Sonpur or Chhapra. Parking will be limited to a single lane on both sides of the road.
People travelling to Sonpur and Hajipur have been advised to use the Mahatma Gandhi Setu, as entry for heavy vehicles—including trucks, buses, and JCBs—will be completely prohibited. Vehicles arriving from Sonpur/Chhapra to Patna will be stopped on the JP Ganga Path Bridge.
Vehicles coming to Patna from JP Setu will not be allowed to cross the Ganga Path and will instead proceed directly to Ashoka Rajpath via the bridge’s approach road.
