Patna: A case of cyber fraud has been reported in Patna where Rs 16.13 lakh was allegedly siphoned from a woman’s bank account after her minor son was threatened with jail and police action during a phone call, police said on Wednesday. The incident has been registered at the Cyber Police Station, and an investigation is underway.
Fraud Triggered Through Phone Call
According to the complaint, the woman from the Phulwarisharif area had given her mobile phone to her minor son to use for watching online content. During this time, the child received a call from an unknown number.
The caller allegedly asked for personal details including name and age before initiating threats, claiming the child had been involved in a serious offence.
Threats of Police Action and Reputation Damage
Police sources said the fraudster intimidated the minor by warning of police action and imprisonment. The caller further claimed that the child’s reputation would be harmed unless money was paid to “settle” the matter.
Under pressure, the child initially transferred Rs 2,500 from his mother’s account as instructed.
Multiple Calls From Different Numbers
Investigators said the accused continued to contact the child from multiple phone numbers even after one was blocked. The fraudster reportedly avoided speaking when the mother answered the calls and continued targeting the minor directly.
The intimidation allegedly continued until larger sums were transferred in multiple instalments.
Case Came to Light After Bank Statement Review
The incident surfaced when the woman later reviewed her bank statement and discovered that a total of Rs 16.13 lakh had been transferred without her knowledge.
Following the discovery, the family approached the Cyber Police Station in Patna and lodged an FIR.
Investigation Underway
Police officials said technical analysis of call records, bank transactions, and digital trails is being conducted to trace the accused. Further action will be taken based on evidence collected during the investigation.
