Patna: A double-decker bus running along Patna’s JP Ganga Path is rapidly becoming a symbol of the city’s tourism, offering both residents and visitors a new way to experience the banks of the Ganges.
Launched by the Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation in September, the service has already carried more than 2,245 passengers, generating revenue of Rs. 2.14 lakh. The initiative has been hailed for giving a fresh identity to Patna’s city tourism while boosting departmental earnings.
Passengers on the bus can enjoy panoramic views of the city and its historic riverside landmarks. The route stretches from Digha Ghat to the JP Ganga Path roundabout, passing Sabhyata Dwar, Darbhanga House, Gandhi Ghat, Mahatma Gandhi Setu, Gai Ghat, and Kangan Ghat. The upper deck offers a 360-degree perspective, allowing tourists to take in both the cityscape and the serene flow of the Ganges.
The bus is equipped with 40 seats, split evenly between an air-conditioned lower deck and an open upper deck. Amenities include a toilet, refrigerator, and a trained guide who provides commentary on the route’s cultural and historical highlights.
The service is also highly accessible, with fares set at Rs. 50 for a one-way journey and Rs. 100 for a round trip. The affordability, combined with the immersive experience, has made the bus a popular choice for locals and out-of-town visitors alike.
Currently operating from 5pm to 10pm, the tourism department plans to adjust timings for the winter months, proposing a schedule from 10am to 8pm to allow passengers to enjoy the Ganga Path under the sun.
Officials say the double-decker bus has become more than just a mode of transport. “It has given Patna a new tourism identity,” a department spokesperson said, noting that both revenue and public interest continue to rise.
