Patna: Hundreds of students, athletes, government officials and residents participated in an environmental awareness walk in Patna on Saturday morning, as part of a campaign aimed at promoting sustainable living and greater public engagement in environmental conservation.
The “Padayatra for the Environment” was organised jointly by the Bihar State Pollution Control Board (BSPCB) and the Bihar Olympic Association. The event began at 6am from Gate No. 1 of Gandhi Maidan, proceeded to the Income Tax Roundabout and concluded at the historic grounds.
Organisers said the initiative was intended to raise awareness about environmental conservation, pollution control, air quality and noise pollution, while encouraging citizens—particularly young people—to play an active role in protecting the environment.
Call for Lifestyle Changes
Addressing participants at Gandhi Maidan, BSPCB Chairman Dr D.K. Shukla said environmental protection could be achieved through small but meaningful changes in daily habits.
“We can contribute to environmental conservation by changing our lifestyle. For short distances, we should walk or use bicycles. Through our individual efforts, we can collectively achieve the larger goal of protecting the environment,” he said.
According to organisers, around 600 people from educational institutions, sports organisations and civic groups participated in the event.

Focus on Climate Awareness
Bihar Olympic Association President Ajay Kumar said the walk was designed to sensitise citizens to the growing challenges posed by air and noise pollution.
He said such initiatives could inspire people to take practical steps to reduce the impact of climate change and contribute to a cleaner environment.
Neeraj Narayan, Member Secretary of the Bihar State Pollution Control Board, said the campaign sought to demonstrate that environmental responsibility and national development could progress together.
“The primary objective is to convey that while addressing global environmental challenges, citizens can also actively contribute to the country’s development,” he said.

Officials Stress Need for Clean Environment
Among those participating in the walk were senior government officials, environmental experts and representatives of various organisations.
S. Chandrashekhar, Chief Conservator of Forests, highlighted the importance of maintaining a clean environment to ensure healthy living conditions.
Rahul Kumar, Managing Director of the North Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited, said such events encouraged people to protect both their own health and the environment.
Representatives from organisations including Bihari Runners, Patna Cultural Events and the Bihar Olympic Association also joined the march.

Participants Take Environmental Pledge
The programme began with participants taking a pledge to adopt environmentally responsible lifestyles and encourage others to do the same.
Organisers said the event was part of broader efforts to promote public awareness about sustainability and foster greater community participation in environmental protection initiatives across Bihar.
