Patna: The Patna High Court has granted the Central Government two weeks to file a counter-affidavit in a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking the conservation, maintenance and development of the historic Maner Sharif Dargah complex in Bihar.
The matter came up before a division bench comprising Chief Justice Meenakshi Madan Rai and Justice Soni Shrivastava during the hearing of a petition filed by Mohammad Mahmood Alam.
The petition raises concerns regarding the cleanliness, security, beautification and overall preservation of the shrine complex, which is regarded as one of Bihar’s most significant Sufi religious sites.
Petition Raises Concerns Over Condition Of Shrine
Appearing for the petitioner, advocate Sanjeev Kumar told the court that Maner Sharif Dargah holds immense historical, religious and cultural importance for devotees and local residents.
He argued that despite its significance, authorities have failed to take adequate measures for the upkeep and development of the shrine and its surrounding infrastructure.
The petition seeks directions for proper maintenance, conservation and beautification of the dargah complex, located around 30 kilometres west of Patna, as well as the associated pond and adjoining areas.
Centre Seeks Time To Respond
During the proceedings, counsel representing the Central Government, the Bihar government, the Tourism Department and other stakeholders presented their submissions before the court.
Additional Solicitor General K.N. Singh, appearing for the Centre, requested additional time to file a detailed counter-affidavit on the issues raised in the PIL.
The court accepted the request and granted the Union Government two weeks to submit its response.
Next Hearing On July 13
The bench subsequently fixed 13 July 2026 as the next date of hearing.
The case is expected to examine the responsibilities of various authorities regarding the preservation and development of the centuries-old shrine, which attracts visitors and devotees from across Bihar and other parts of the country.
Maner Sharif is widely regarded as one of eastern India’s most important Sufi centres and remains a prominent destination for religious tourism in Bihar.
